Leadership+ is a range of training and developmental opportunities to enable people living with HIV (PLWHA) to develop their life and leadership aspirations.
The programme consists of a number of modules that can be combined to suit the needs of particular client groups. Each bespoke programme can be tailored to the aims and needs of the commissioning organisation and its service users.
Each programme typically includes face-to-face training and individual coaching, delivered by experienced and qualified personal performance coaches, trainers and facilitators. The leaders also facilitate group work, round table discussions, learning action project groups and working with a learning buddy. There is a strong emphasis on building individual resources and support networks so that the participants can continue their development post-programme.
To facilitate and enable the personal development of PLWHA to achieve their life and leadership related goals.
Modules within the Leadership+ programme are designed to be combined to meet the needs of various commissioning agents and client groups.
Initially, we foresee programmes for people at 3 different stages of their development:
1. Personal Empowerment+ Programme
People who are beginning to recognise that they could be contributing more but currently lack direction and purpose in their lives. This programme can be tailored specifically for those people who have been on long term sick leave and lack the motivation, confidence or the know how to take those first steps back into employment, education or voluntary work.
2. Leadership+ – The First Steps
People who are ready to take leadership to help other people ‘move on’. This programme will typically be for people who are already in paid employment, voluntary work or some other social organisation and want to develop their leadership potential.
3. Leadership+ – The Next Level
People who are already leaders and want to enhance their personal leadership style and skills and increase their leadership contributions.
The following pages give examples of what might be included in each of these programmes.

Additional to the leadership programme detailed above, we would like to develop the leadership skills and ambitions of PLWHA working within the HIV community. We aim to bring together leaders from different HIV support organisations who would set their own agenda to develop the HIV community in general. Once the group is formed we will provide training and coaching around the issues that they raise, some of which may be chosen from pre-defined modules but some of which can be put together as they are requested.
The key aims are:
Bring together leaders from around the HIV support community
Develop leadership skills and aspirations within the group
Form a network of leaders who can work together on an ongoing basis
Work on one or more real projects to provide a tangible outcomes
This programme would be facilitated by the course leaders but the content would be decided by the participants through a process of training needs analysis and negotiation.
Leadership+ is designed and is delivered by Danny West of RYL Training and Coaching Consultancy and Andy Hilton of Result Coaching.
Skilled and professionally qualified associate trainers, facilitators and personal performance coaches are employed, where appropriate, to contribute to the programme.
Each programme is delivered in partnership with relevant HIV support organisations.
Danny has extensive experience as a trainer, facilitator and personal performance coach. He holds a social work qualification with the General Social Care Council, a management qualification with the Chartered Management Institute and he has successfully completed his Diploma in Personal Performance Coaching with ‘The Coaching Academy’ (Europe’s largest accredited coaching training organisation) at distinction level.
Danny has worked extensively within the public, voluntary and corporate sectors with a wide range of client groups particularly with disabled people, people with long term health conditions and especially people living with HIV. Danny was the first local government principal training officer for HIV in the UK and is the Vice Chair of the National Long Term Survivors Group; a UK charity that supports people living with HIV for 5 or more years.
Danny has been living with HIV for the past 25 years. He established RYL Training & Coaching Consultancy in 2006
Andy is an experienced trainer and personal performance coach. He helps people to develop a positive mental attitude and take positive steps in their lives. Andy’s speciality is working with people living with HIV although he also works with a number of organisations who help people with a range of disabilities. Andy worked for many years in industry and has been living with HIV for over 20 years. Andy is Chair of the National Long-Term Survivors Group.
Danny West, Andy Hilton and associates have worked as consultants and coaches to develop and deliver leadership and empowerment programmes for a number of organisations in the UK and Europe. These include:
Numerous HIV support organisations in the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe.
Abbott Pharmaceuticals
Pfizer Pharmaceuticals
The former Disability Rights Commission and currently The Royal Association of Disability and Rights (RADAR)
The Essex Coalition of Disability (ECDP).
We will work with commissioning agencies to source funding from statutory and voluntary organisations.
In particular, in line with the government’s drive to encourage people off benefits and back into work, we envisage approaching the Department of Work and Pensions to secure core funding for the Personal Empowerment / Back to work programme. This could be offered in partnership with an established government funded agency who provide the general back to work training (CV’s, interview skills, etc) while Leadership+ delivers HIV specific content (overcoming stigma, Disability Discrimination Act, HIV as a hidden disability, etc).
In a nutshell, Leadership+ has been developed by PLWHA for PLWHA.
There are numerous personal empowerment and leadership development courses available, many of which are excellent in structure and content. Where relevant we have used tried and tested elements from other programmes to ensure that Leadership+ delivers excellent results.
By developing and delivering courses specifically for PLWHA, the participants can exchange their stories and experiences with the knowledge that they share some common ground. By including discussions about how HIV has affected them it will encourage people to perceive HIV as being only one aspect of their lives.
The Leadership+ programme aims to overcome the barriers associated with living with HIV to enable participants to live a life that is fulfilling and that they choose. Empowering PLWHA, particularly in leadership positions, will contribute to the breakdown of the social barriers that surround HIV. Danny West and Andy Hilton act as role models to demonstrate that living with HIV is not necessarily a barrier to living a full life.
